Adcause.io - Making The World Better With Technology
Before I dive into the objective of this blog post, I want to talk about something personal and that is giving back to the society.
I have volunteered a little in the past from working in a soup kitchen to teaching kids on writing Python codes, however none of it seems to click.
All of which seems to be a one-off event which brings about a brief moment of satisfaction and I am pretty sure I am not the only one feeling this way.
You are as fortunate as me to be reading this over the internet.
The Internet had given us the ability to connect with each other and the idea of advertisements are fundamentally the spreading of a piece of information.
With the shift of our attention to the digital environment, online ads are more prevalent than ever before.
We can use this to our advantage by trading your attention for something in return.
This something is what we can use to make the world better.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could contribute to a cause with minimal effort?
That’s the idea of starting this project. Many millennials, including myself, wish to give back to the society but on one condition - it does not take much effort.
This project is an extension which replaces your web browser New Tab to displays the 3 following components:
- Current time
The last point is exceptionally important since it will generate something that we can contribute - revenues from the advertisement.
How does it work?
- You will first have to install the Chrome extension (Firefox extension is coming soon)
- Whitelist the domain “edricteo.com” if you are using an ad-blocker.
It’s that simple.
Open a new tab and once you should start seeing advertisements. You are good to go.
With a few beta testers from Singapore, load times for the new tabs are ranging from 300ms to 500ms on average which is pretty good considering that ads are being loaded. I will write up a technical post when there are more users using this extension.
Which cause to donate?
Each year I will identify a theme for the project.
This is year 0 and for both year 0 and year 1, the theme will be on Education. This means that funds raised from now till December 2020 will be donated to causes which focuses on education.
Proof of donation
Currently the project is running on Google’s Adsense for its advertisement.
In the long run, the project seeks to build relationship with company for direct advertisement to maximise the revenue.
Screenshots of both revenue receipt and donation receipt will be taken and uploaded to the Facebook page of AdCause. So please follow it if you haven’t done so.
It is important to note that the threshold for Google Adsense is $150. What this means is that I will only receive the payment after reaching $150. And based on the number of users, the first donation will definitely not happen in the next few months. So I hope you are able to understand and see this as a long term project.
Monetising the project
This project is meant to be a long running project and I have no intentions to make money off it. There will be no new feature and almost zero maintenance cost.
The only financial cost required is the domain itself, and I am more than willing to absorb this cost for now.
However, there are intentions of taking a fraction of the revenue to advertise this project to achieve a wider reach.
Rest assure that regardless of whatever the operation cost, we will cap at 20% of the overall ads revenue. This means that 80% are definitely going to causes.
If we require a service that costs $30 and for the current month we have raised $100 in ad revenue, $20 will be reserved until we have sufficient funds to engage the service.
Truth be told, there are no future plans for this project. Like I mentioned earlier, there will be no new major features because it is meant to be a simple dashboard.
This way, we are able to reduce the maintenance cost to almost zero meaning there are no operational cost.
Should you have a brilliant idea on a feature, you can work on it and submit a merge request to the project’s gitlab repo. And I will merge your request after reviewing it.
This project is open sourced for transparency so you are able to see exactly what is going on in the background.
